Stories of Our Legacy: Three Generations of Kin Volunteers

Pictured (left to right): Reier Lee (TM50 Youth Ambassador), Dawn Lee (TM35 Chair), and Pat Smith (TM22 Chair).

Three generations of Kin, all on TeleMiracle Committees!

In addition to their roles on the TeleMiracle Committee they have served in various positions on the Kin Canada National Board, the Kinsmen Foundation Board, District 3 Executive Team, and U of S Campus Club. Both Pat and Dawn have received life memberships with District 3 for their longstanding and meaningful service over the years, and Reier has received a top 30 under 30 leadership award.

Their roles on the committees mark some historic moments:
– Pat’s year – the first time the TeleMiracle Chair was not from Saskatoon or Regina, Pat hails from Watrous, SK.

– Dawn’s year – many first-year committee members were on Dawn’s team.

-Reier, this year – his role as Youth Ambassador is only one year old so he will continue to shape the future of this role this year.

Pat’s involvement in Kin and eventually TeleMiracle had humble beginnings. She was a young mom, new to Watrous seeking out community. Someone had mentioned to her that she should come to the Kinette club meeting in Watrous. When she arrived she was welcomed with open arms by the ladies. She soon joined the Kinettes curling team and had her first out of town experience at a bonspiel in Unity. It blossomed into involvement at TeleMiracle and many other service opportunities as the club was very active. When Pat was TM22 Chair, her husband Lyle, was the Kinsmen Foundation Board Chair. This legacy of community service now spans three generations of her family.

Pat, Dawn, and Reier acknowledge the impact that comes out of fundraisers such as TeleMiracle. They encourage all who wish to get involved with Kin or those already part of a club to think bigger than their club. When you volunteer with TeleMiracle, you are putting in the work for the province of Saskatchewan, ensuring more people have access to medical travel and mobility and/or special needs equipment.

TeleMiracle is a 20-hour, annual telethon that is broadcast live in Saskatchewan. This event is put on by the Kinsmen, Kinette, and Kin clubs from across the province and it is a fundraiser for the Kinsmen Foundation. The Kinsmen Foundation exists year-round, granting applicants access to medical travel assistance and/or mobility equipment.

Despite only having a population of around 1.2 million people, the generous residents of the province have helped us raise over $171 million since 1977.
